GT72VR-7RE Sata/PCI Extension
« am: 14. Februar 2018, 23:25:07 »

Hi!

The stock GT72VR-7RE has an optical drive, an 1TB-2,5"HDD and an 512GB SSD.

I already replaced the 1TB in the upper 2,5"-mount with an 3TB one, but the lower slot is still empty with no connector to mount anything to it.
So is there a way to change this, so I can mount my 1TB drive to the lower slot, while keeping my upper slot HDD, my ODD and my SSD functional at full speed?
Since I was curious I had a look in the BIOS and saw the many unused SATA and PCI slots.
So I kept searching and found these two videos:
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJITXKQmC90" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJITXKQmC90</a> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIvLQpTnjMM" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIvLQpTnjMM</a>
In both videos a hub is located where my SSD is mounted now, but also the layout around it is slightly different. For example there is a plug connected to this hub which I don't even have (Marked in pink.). I suppose for power supply.
So is there an adapter that works with my GT72VR-7RE or can be made to work with it in some way to provide more storage space?

Thanks in advance!

This mod does not work with the GT72VR because the device only has one M.2 slot. In the GT72 (S) there are 3-4 M.2 slots, one of which is used for the data stream for the 2nd HDD bay at the MOD.

I know, or I should say that is what I feared.
But that is the reason why I am asking for a way to add so slots back in order to perform this mod.
Is there a small pcb that provides those ports for my laptop?
The guy who does the mod has an MS-17812, as it is written on the card requiring an extra cable I don't have a connector to.
On the MSI video it seems to be the same way regarding the cable, although the appearance of the PCB used is slightly different. Sadly I can't read the model number.
So is there a PCB that does not require this cable, what does the cable do anyway, does it serve power supply of the adaper and would it be possible to solder on this cable or if it really only is for power get the power from somewhere else less risky?
